Be All and End All: What Does It Mean and How to Use It?

The phrase be all and end all is a common idiom that means the most important part of something or the reason for something. It can also mean the ultimate goal or the final result of something. The phrase is often used to emphasize the importance or significance of something or someone.

The origin of the phrase can be traced back to Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, where Macbeth says:

If it were done when ’tis done, then ’twere well
It were done quickly: if the assassination
Could trammel up the consequence, and catch
With his surcease success; that but this blow
Might be the be-all and the end-all here,
But here, upon this bank and shoal of time,
We’ld jump the life to come.
