How to Pray the Noon Prayer (Namazi i drekes) According to the Hanafi School

The noon prayer (namazi i drekes) is one of the five obligatory prayers in Islam. It consists of four units (rakat) of prayer, two sunnah and two obligatory. The sunnah units are performed before the obligatory ones, and they are recommended but not mandatory. The obligatory units are performed after the sunnah ones, and they are mandatory for every Muslim who is sane, mature, and free from any impediments.

The following is a brief guide on how to pray the noon prayer according to the Hanafi school of Islamic jurisprudence, which is the traditional school of Albanian Muslims. This guide is based on the information from the website Namazi.eu, which provides detailed instructions and videos on how to perform various prayers.

The Sunnah Units

  1. Raise your hands up to your ears and say “Allahu Akbar” (God is the Greatest) to start the prayer.
  2. Place your right hand over your left hand on your chest and recite silently: “Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika wa tabarakasmuka wa ta’ala jadduka wa la ilaha ghayruka” (Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You, and blessed is Your name, and exalted is Your majesty, and there is no god besides You).
  3. Recite silently the opening chapter of the Quran, Surah al-Fatiha: “Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim. Alhamdu lillahi Rabbil ‘alamin. Ar-Rahmanir Rahim. Maliki yawmid din. Iyyaka na’budu wa iyyaka nasta’in. Ihdinas siratal mustaqim. Siratal ladhina an’amta ‘alayhim ghayril maghdubi ‘alayhim wa ladhdhalin” (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Master of the Day of Judgment. You alone we worship and You alone we ask for help. Guide us to the straight path. The path of those whom You have favored, not of those who have earned Your anger or of those who have gone astray).
  4. Recite silently another chapter or some verses from the Quran of your choice.
  5. Bow down by placing your hands on your knees and say “Subhana Rabbiyal ‘Azim” (Glory be to my Lord, the Most Great) three times or more.
  6. Stand up straight and say “Sami’Allahu liman hamidah” (Allah hears those who praise Him), then say “Rabbana lakal hamd” (Our Lord, to You is due all praise).
  7. Prostrate by placing your forehead, nose, palms, knees, and toes on the ground and say “Subhana Rabbiyal ‘Ala” (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High) three times or more.
  8. Raise your head and sit on your heels and say “Allahu Akbar” (God is the Greatest).
  9. Prostrate again and say “Subhana Rabbiyal ‘Ala” (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High) three times or more.
  10. Raise your head and sit on your heels and say “Allahu Akbar” (God is the Greatest). This completes one unit of prayer.
  11. Stand up and repeat steps 2 to 10 for the second unit of prayer.
  12. After completing the second prostration of the second unit, sit on your heels and recite silently: “At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat. As-salamu ‘alayka ayyuhan-nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As-salamu ‘alayna wa ‘ala ‘ibadillahis-salihin. Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluh” (All greetings, prayers
