Significance of Satyanarayana Katha
Satyanarayana Katha is an integral part of Satyanarayana Pooja. It consists of five stories that illustrate the glory of Lord Satyanarayana and the importance of observing the vow with sincerity and devotion. The stories are as follows:
- The first story is about a poor Brahmin who was instructed by Lord Vishnu in his dream to perform Satyanarayana Pooja to overcome his poverty. He did so with faith and received abundant wealth and happiness.
- The second story is about a rich merchant who was devoted to Lord Satyanarayana and performed the pooja regularly. He also taught his son-in-law to do the same. However, his son-in-law forgot to perform the pooja after returning from a voyage with a lot of wealth. As a result, he lost his wealth and was imprisoned by the king. He then realized his mistake and performed the pooja with repentance. He regained his wealth and freedom by the grace of Lord Satyanarayana.
- The third story is about a king who was hunting in a forest and came across a group of sages performing Satyanarayana Pooja. He joined them and listened to the katha with respect. He also expressed his desire to perform the pooja himself. However, he postponed it due to his negligence. He then faced many calamities in his kingdom and lost his family and throne. He then remembered his promise and performed the pooja with devotion. He got back his kingdom and family by the mercy of Lord Satyanarayana.
- The fourth story is about a woodcutter who was poor but honest. He heard the katha from a Brahmin who was performing Satyanarayana Pooja in a temple. He also wished to perform the pooja himself. He collected some money by selling wood and bought some prasadam for the pooja. However, he could not find a priest to conduct the pooja for him. He then decided to do it himself with sincerity. He was blessed by Lord Satyanarayana with a lot of wealth and happiness.
- The fifth story is about a group of cowherds who were grazing their cows near a village where Satyanarayana Pooja was being performed by a rich man. They were invited to join the pooja but they refused out of arrogance. They also mocked the prasadam offered to them. As a result, they lost their cows and suffered from hunger and thirst. They then realized their folly and apologized to the rich man. They also participated in the pooja with reverence and received their cows back by the kindness of Lord Satyanarayana.
These stories teach us that Satyanarayana Pooja should be done with faith, devotion, sincerity and gratitude. It should not be done with pride, greed, dishonesty or indifference. It should also be followed by sharing the prasadam with others as an act of charity.
