JG Zuma Marathon: A Race to the Finish

The JG Zuma Marathon is an annual 42.2km race that takes place in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It was launched in 2015 as a tribute to former president Jacob Zuma, who hails from the region. The race attracts top athletes from across the country and beyond, who compete for a lucrative prize of R50 000 for the men and women winners, respectively. The race also incorporates a 5km Fun Run for the public to enjoy.

The marathon starts at New Venture Farm on R33 close to Mpolweni and finishes at Greytown’s King Edward Park. It is held in April, which is a perfect time for runners to qualify for the Comrades Marathon or to train for it. The race is run in accordance with the rules of the Athletics South Africa, IAAF and KZN Athletics. All runners must purchase a Champion Chip for R130 in order to be timed and to qualify for medals and prizes. The cut off time for the marathon is 11.30am and the prize giving takes place at 12 noon.

The JG Zuma Marathon is more than just a race, it is also a family day that celebrates the culture and heritage of the region. The event features live entertainment, food stalls, exhibitions and other activities for the spectators and participants. The race also aims to promote social cohesion, rural development and healthy lifestyles among the communities.

Online registration can be done at www.jgzumamarathon.co.za, while entry forms are available from various outlets such as Kings Park Athletics Stadium, Durban Runner Sports Shop, Poobie Naidoo (PMB), ChampionChip Africa offices or at the Umshwathi and Umvoti Municipality offices. A shuttle service is also available on race day from the King Edward Park to the start at 3.45am and 4.30am only.
