Kirsty Smith: The Scottish Defender Who Shines in the Women's Super League

Kirsty Smith is a Scottish footballer who plays as a defender for English Women’s Super League club West Ham United and the Scotland national team. She has been praised for her versatility, pace, and crossing ability. She has also represented her country at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the first ever appearance for Scotland at the tournament.

Club Career

Smith started her career at Musselburgh Windsor, a local club in her hometown of Dalkeith. In July 2007, she joined Hibernian, one of the most successful clubs in Scottish women’s football. She won three Scottish Women’s Premier League Cups and two Scottish Women’s Cups with Hibs, and also finished as league runners-up four times.

In June 2018, Smith and her teammate Lizzie Arnot left Hibernian and signed with Manchester United for their inaugural season in the FA Women’s Championship, the second tier of English women’s football. Smith made her debut for United in a 1-0 League Cup win over Liverpool, and scored her first goal for the club in an 11-1 League Cup win over Leicester City. She helped United win the Championship title and promotion to the FA Women’s Super League (WSL) in their first season.

Smith spent four seasons with United in the WSL, playing alongside some of the best players in the world such as Tobin Heath, Christen Press, and Lauren James. She made 40 league appearances for United, but struggled with injuries and competition for places in the latter part of her spell.

In July 2022, Smith signed a two-year deal with West Ham United, with the option to extend for a further year. She joined former United manager Casey Stoney, who had taken over at West Ham earlier that summer. Smith has been a regular starter for West Ham in the 2022-23 season, playing as a right-back or a left-back. She has also contributed to some important goals for the Hammers, such as assisting Dagny Brynjarsdottir’s opener in a 2-0 win over Arsenal.

Smith has represented Scotland at various youth levels, including under-17 and under-19. She made her senior debut for Scotland in October 2014, in a World Cup qualification play-off against the Netherlands. She has since earned 49 caps for her country, playing mostly as a left-back.

Smith was part of the historic Scotland squad that qualified for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, the first time that Scotland had ever reached the finals of a major tournament. She played in all three group games against England, Japan, and Argentina, but Scotland were eliminated after a dramatic 3-3 draw with Argentina.

Smith has continued to be a key player for Scotland under new manager Pedro Martínez Losa, who took over from Shelley Kerr in September 2021. She has been involved in Scotland’s successful campaign to reach the play-offs for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. She scored her first international goal in a 4-0 win over Ukraine in April 2023.
