Shivaji Maharaj was born in 1630 in the hill fort of Shivneri, near Pune. His father, Shahaji, was a general in the service of the Adilshahi Sultanate of Bijapur. His mother, Jijabai, was a pious and courageous woman who instilled in him a sense of pride and devotion to his land and religion. Shivaji grew up learning the art of warfare and statecraft from his tutors and mentors, such as Dadoji Konddeo and Dadaji Naras Prabhu.
Shivaji started his career as a young chieftain who challenged the Mughal Empire, which was the dominant power in India at that time. He carved out a small kingdom for himself by capturing forts and territories from the Mughals and the Adilshahis. He also established a strong navy to protect the coastal regions from foreign invaders. He fought several battles against the Mughal generals and governors, such as Afzal Khan, Shaista Khan and Aurangzeb. He also forged alliances with other Hindu rulers, such as the Rajputs and the Marathas.
Shivaji was not only a great warrior, but also a visionary leader and administrator. He introduced many reforms and innovations in his government, such as the Ashtapradhan system of eight ministers, the Chauth and Sardeshmukhi taxes, the spy network of havaldars, the revenue system of watans and jagirs, and the military system of mavalis and sarnobats. He also promoted education, trade, agriculture, art and culture in his domain. He was tolerant and respectful of all religions and sects, and granted protection to mosques, temples and churches alike. He was a devout Hindu who followed the teachings of his guru, Samarth Ramdas.
